How to make fueling semi-trucks with used cooking oil not only an environmentally-friendly business idea, but also a profitable one had high school students Jacob Spangler and Peyton Oswald doing some extensive research.
The two were teamed up in a 鈥淪hark Tank鈥 activity at the first Business & Leadership Academy hosted by the CIU School of & Professional Studies this summer. Jacob and Peyton would make a case for their business idea at a Shark Tank presentation and competition at the end of the week with prizes going to the winner.
Those attending the Academy were also introduced to discussions on international business, finance, communication, leadership development, marketing, sport management and entrepreneurship.
鈥淕od was the first entrepreneur, creating the world from nothing, and businesses 鈥 successful entrepreneurs are creating from nothing,鈥 said Associate Professor of Business Administration . 鈥淲e want to teach them about business and leadership principles that they can carry with them throughout their life, especially from a Christian worldview.鈥
Assisting the teams of students was 2021 School of Business alumna Elizabeth Kenny who developed the Academy as a CIU student when a summer camp idea was proposed.
鈥淚 came up the with detailed work and what we should focus on (including) the title and the classes that they should take,鈥 Kenny said. 鈥淭o see this all come together has been amazing and a great experience and I鈥檓 glad I got to participate in it this year and watch these students grow and learn.鈥
Meanwhile, Hays says the Academy idea has caught the attention of the where those making a transition could learn 鈥渁bout business opportunities and leadership when they are released at 18 鈥 a ministry opportunity (for CIU), as well.鈥
